Step 1 - Loading Tab Program (Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP)
- Click on the 'Start' button located at the bottom left corner of your screen.
- Click on 'Run'.
- Type in the word: edit and then press 'OK'.
Step 2 - How To Use the MS-DOS EDIT Program
This is a very basic program with only a small handful of commands, which makes it one of the easiest
progams to use (Plus it comes already installed on your computer for free). I use this program exclusively
for all of my tabs that I post on the web (unless I'm using PowerTab).
To make this program look better, I suggest clicking on 'Options'
then 'Colors' and making the foreground color black and making the background color
BrWhite. Then click on 'OK'.
The 5 major keys you will need to use are: '|', '-', the
insert key, the delete key and the enter key.
- To create lines, just draw them using the '|' and '-' keys
on your keyboard. (Ex. |--| |---------| ).
- Then after you have created a line, you can highlight it
(either with the mouse or holding down the Shift and arrow keys)
and click on 'Edit' then 'Copy'.
- Go down to the next line (by pressing the enter key) then
click 'Edit' and 'Paste'.
- Keep doing that until you have a total of 6 lines
(one for each guitar string). Then highlight (all at once) the 6 lines
you made and copy and paste them till you have enough of them for your
tab. If you want one that has a couple lines already drawn in for you,
you can copy the template I have created.
- After you have the lines set up, press your 'Insert' key
(This will make the cursor change into a block shape) and just start
typing over the lines with fret numbers wherever you want to.
- Make sure your lines are less than 75 spaces long. Otherwise your tab
might not look correct to someone else who opens it. To make sure of this,
on the bottom right of the MS-DOS Edit Program make sure that 'Col' is
never more than 75.
- Make sure to Save your work frequently!!!
